Entering the healthcare industry as a student or new professional is an exciting time. You're stepping into a field where the culmination of your skills and compassion can lead to making a real difference in people's lives (not to mention, a robust career for yourself).

However, along with your knowledge and enthusiasm, is the importance of presenting yourself in a manner that reflects the professionalism and trustworthiness expected in healthcare settings.

To make dressing for success easier, we’ve put together the major dos and don'ts of dressing professionally in the healthcare industry.

Do: Understand the Dress Code

✓ Do: Familiarize yourself with your institution's dress code policy. Healthcare settings often have specific requirements to ensure safety, hygiene, and a professional appearance.

✓ Do: Wear scrubs if required, as they are easy to clean and offer a professional appearance. Read our tips for buying your first set of scrubs here.

✓ Do: Wear a lab coat if your role necessitates it.

✓ Do: Choose closed-toe, non-slip shoes for safety reasons.

Don’t: Ignore Comfort and Functionality

✘ Don’t: Choose fabrics that are not breathable. Opt for materials that allow your skin to breathe, such as cotton blends. Read more about the value of quality scrubs here.

✘ Don’t: Wear clothing that is too tight or too loose. Ensure your scrubs or uniforms fit well to avoid discomfort and safety hazards.

✘ Don’t: Skimp on footwear. Invest in high-quality, supportive shoes to keep your feet and back comfortable during long shifts.

Do: Maintain a Professional Appearance

✓ Do: Keep your hair neat and clean. If you have long hair, tie it back.

✓ Do: Limit jewelry to simple studs or a wedding band to avoid safety risks and hygiene issues.

✓ Do: Ensure your clothing and shoes are clean and in good repair. Stains, wrinkles, and scuffed shoes can detract from a professional appearance. Read our tips for maintaining a polished and professional uniform here.

Don’t: Neglect Hygiene Standards

✘ Don’t: Forget hand hygiene. Follow your institution's hand hygiene protocols and keep your nails short and clean.

✘ Don’t: Wear strong perfumes or colognes that might irritate patients or colleagues.

✘ Don’t: Neglect uniform care. Regularly wash your uniforms and scrubs to maintain hygiene standards.

Do: Express Professionalism Through Your Attire

✓ Do: Choose colors that make you feel confident and positive if your institution allows it. Read more about the impact of color on patient experience here.

✓ Do: Use minimal accessories to add a touch of your style without compromising professionalism.

Don’t: Be Unprepared for Special Situations

✘ Don’t: Forget to check the dress code for each department or facility when on clinical rotations. Some may require business casual attire rather than scrubs.

✘ Don’t: Underestimate the importance of dressing up for presentations or important meetings. Opt for business casual attire to convey professionalism.

Dressing professionally in the healthcare industry is about balancing functionality, comfort, and a polished appearance. By following your institution's dress code, prioritizing hygiene, and presenting yourself neatly, you'll contribute to a professional and trustworthy healthcare environment. In doing so, you’ll be able to continuously reflect your commitment to and respect for yourself, your patients, and your colleagues in the healthcare industry.
